The Soliloquy is a unique, personal commentary upon a century in which Dr. Du Bois played a most consequential role. Perhaps more than anyone else, his deeply informed, impassioned writings and ceaseless activity brought to the fore the problems of racial oppression in the 20th century. Written in his 90th year, he took the manuscript with him to Ghana where he went to live late in 1961. Rescued from Accra, after the military coup of early 1966, it is now published as he wrote it, with only a few minor changes of a technical nature. Although he had written two semi-autobiographies previously - one in his 50th year (Darkwater) and one in his 70th year (Dusk of Dawn) - the present volume is quite different. The earlier books were more essays on the concept of race as felt in his own life rather than conventional biographies. The Soliloquy not only covers an additional two decades in which the outlook of the author was significantly altered. Unlike the others, it is more fully autobiographical. He seeks, as he writes, to view my life as frankly and fully as I can. With his characteristic honesty and directness, he warns the reader of the intense subjectivity of autobiography, offering this account of his life as he understood it and as he would like others to believe.

Du Bois Looking Back

A good read for Black people who want some insight into one of our greatest minds. This book documents Du Bois’ travels around the world and his education in the North and the South. You can read his opinions of other Black figures like Booker T. Washington, Marcus Garvey and Paul Robeson. As well as his political views on the betterment of the Black race. W.E.B. Du Bois felt the solution for the problems of the Black race was to emulate the way the Soviet Union and communist China rebuilt themselves and it’s a shame we haven’t listened to him. Racism and capitalism go hand in hand. This is why communism and socialism have always been scare words to white people. White people have buried us economically through centuries of uncompensated labor and trying to emulate their greed will not help us. Du Bois saw the evils of capitalist greed and even late into his life white people were trying to imprison him for being a Soviet Union sympathizer. I’m amazed he wasn’t killed and made it into his 90s. Any Black person that sees it as their responsibility to serve the Black race should be honored and Black children should know Du Bois at an early age. The book drags a bit, but I still recommend it.

"One of the greatest thinkers ever"

This book should be read by everyone who is interested in civil rights. Dubois was the pioneer of the civil rights movement and anything he had to say deserves to be read. This book is just as important as the Autobiographies of both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. After reading this book I realized what bravery was all about. Dubois didn't have the luxury of a "movement" behind him, he stood alone. He spoke his mind to whomever he felt was hindering the progress of blacks in America. Not only did he stand alone and speak his mind but he did it in a time when a black man would be lynched simply for looking at a white person the wrong way. This book is written with the same poetic style as most of his other work and continues the story of his battle against oppression where "Souls of Black Folk", and "Darkwater" leave off. You will definately benefit by taking the time to read the almost century long journey of one of the greatest thinkers and writers the world has ever seen.

W.E.B. DuBois is not given his due in many history books but it is good to read his thoughts and perceptions as history unfolded before his eyes and much of that history he was the impetus for things that took place. This book is written by this highly educated man for other highly educated people sometimes making it a hard read. Nevertheless, it displays his insights on how the NAACP pushed him out of an organization he helped to bring into existence and other personal spotlights in his life. We should all strive to be as articulate as this man.
