Outdated and Irresponsible!

I am a school librarian by profession and a cat rescuer by avocation. As dogs and cats are still America's most popular pets, I am always looking for good, responsible pet books for my students. I purchased a copy of Me and My Pet Cat and was very disappointed by the information contained there.
The book does mention that if your cat is a female, she should be spayed. Correct. But what about the males? They are the other half of the breeding pair; and they, too, benefit from being altered, preventing such things as testicular cancer.
The book also refers to the problem of fleas, and while I realize that the copyright of the book is 1996, when Advantage and other safer, on-the-spot flea products were in their infancy, I was disconcerted to see a "cute" drawing of a cat sitting on the floor with a little girl standing over it pouring the contents of a flea powder container all over her kitty in clouds of dust. That is neither the correct or even a responsible way to administer such products, which contain insecticides that can make even a human ill if inhaled in sufficient quantity. There is also a reference to flea collars, which veterinarians will tell you are not effective and may also be harmful.
I think the author should have checked her facts more carefully before writing a book that will be in the hands of children everywhere. When so many excellent animal books go out-of-print, I think that this one has definitely outlived any usefulness that could have been attributed to it.
Amazon is currently out of stock -- lets hope they stay that way. I threw my copy out before it went on my shelf.
