Charles Stewart Parnell, by F.S.L. Lyons

If Daniel O'Connell first articulated modern Irish nationalism, Parnell first organized it. This enigmatic, icy aristocrat became the unlikely and unchallenged leader of Irish nationalism in its early heroic phase. Without him, Home Rule would not have become the formidable cause that it was. Parnell not only mobilized nationalist Ireland, exploiting discontent with the land system and a desire for political autonomy, he also subverted the usages of nineteenth-century British politics by introducing the filibuster into the House of Commons, by dividing Gladstone's Liberal party between those who supported Home Rule and those who opposed it, and generally forced the Irish question to the heart of British politics where it remained until 1922.

one of the great biographies
By Stanley Crowe
F. S. L. Lyons was one of Ireland's most distinguished historians over the last 40 years of the 20th Century, and his book "Ireland since the Famine" is still a wonderful account of a rich period in Irish history, although its insights have since been supplemented by a group of fine younger Irish historians (some of whom Lyons trained). He's also a wonderful writer, and it's no surprise to hear that at his death he was working on a biography of Yeats. He wrote a fine biography of the Irish parliamentary politician John Dillon, but his biography of Parnell stands (along with "Ireland since the Famine") as his crowning achievement. Parnell is one of the most complicated and fascinating figures in Irish history -- a man who was full of contradictions, who didn't simply represent the interests of his class (the Anglo-Irish landowners), who was a Protestant dedicated to fashioning a more independent Ireland that was very largely Catholic, a riveting orator, a master deal-maker, and a man willing to use the threat of violence to achieve his ends, although he never ceased to work within the British Parliamentary system. The story of his relationship with Kitty O'Shea was as sentimentalized in popular Irish imagination as was his political career as "the uncrowned king of Ireland." He was a brilliant, maddening, effective man, and Lyons does justice to him in this biography. It's unsentimental, clear-sighted, thoroughly researched, and detailed, and it doesn't underestimate either his importance or the importance of contemporaries like Dillon and Michael Davitt, who in sometimes uneasy relationship to Parnell helped move Ireland towards independence.

Charles Stewart Parnell - parliamentarian and Irish man
By Barry
FSL Lyons provides a thorough biography of one of the real influencers of the modern Ireland. Parnell in some respects fell into politics. At heart he was an engineer, an entrepreneur, a farmer, even a landlord. Yet he became one of the great champions of the ordinary people of Ireland - through the parliamentary process. Lyons does not eulogise Parnell - there is plenty to ponder in respect of Parnell's foibles, vanity and weaknesses. But there is much to admire - the intellect, the energy and drive, the leadership and the commitment to driving change through parliament. And there is the sadness - his love for Captain O'Shea's wife, the affair, the divorce and his untimely death so shortly after they were married. And the impact of all of this on his standing - in England, with the Liberals, in Ireland - with his colleagues, the church and the press.

Anyone seeking to understand the history of Ireland - and its relationship with England/British Empire - would do well to read this biography of Parnell. It also provides much of the background and leadup to what transpired in 1916 and thereafter.
