About the Author
Myrtle Allen was born in Cork in 1924. She and her husband bought Ballymaloe in 1948, and there she began her varied life of farmer's wife, mother, writer, hotelier, hostess, teacher and of course, chef.

Excellent Irish Cookbook

Quite simply, this is my favorite cookbook. I'm from Ireland so there is an element of bias but nevertheless you cannot beat Mrs Allen's simple advice such as how to roast meats properly and how to make the most of the subtle flavours that are inherently Irish. Furthermore, Myrtle Allen wrote beautifully. Her stories are very charming and I enjoy reading a few again each time I am cooking with this book. I can no longer pass a field of buttercups without a smile and a nod to this great woman.

cooking in ireland

the book has great recipies from the Ireland school of cooking. I have looked up the school on the internet and being a cook my self I was very pleased. the only thing I found wrong was no pictures of the dishes, but the recipies are very easy to understand and be able to use them. so I recommend this book if you want to cook real irish definetly get this book

Wouldn't buy again

There are maybe 3 recipes in the whole book I would use. I don't need (or want) to know how to kill shrimp or cook a pig's head. That's one of the biggest problems with buying cook books online. You just don't know what's in them before you buy.
