The Princess and the Pea Meets the Bachelor

The reclusive margrave needs a wife and he needs one quickly. He enlists the help of newly weds Jorgen and Odette to help him find the perfect candidate. Despite his orders to marry in haste, he prefers to find a mate with whom he feels compatible—a real lady of culture and distinction who cares more about others than she does about fashion.
Odette suggests a house party with a series of tests for each potential bride that will help the margrave make an informed choice. The invitations go out and the festivities begin.
This time, though, the heroine comes from the serving class of a medieval fiefdom. Avalina, a beautiful young woman who has few choices about her destiny, lives in a society where everyone is kept strictly in his or her place.
Forced to perpetrate a lie and pretend to be a lady, she must navigate the medieval equivalent of "The Bachelor" while at the same time making sure that the Margrave of Thornbeck feels sympathetic towards her master, the Earl of Plimmwald, without taking any real interest in her.
Unfortunately, the Margrave seems to single her out for his attentions at the same time someone seems to single her out for cruel pranks. How long can Avalina live a lie before the truth is revealed, and just what makes a person a 'lady' or a gentleman?
Dickerson brings up the difficult questions that readers today face—culpability when one is coerced to act a certain way and forgiveness when we feel sinned against. How can a person reconcile his or her feelings with the call to forgive and forget and at what point can one break away from a past that threatens to destroy one’s future?
As always, I appreciate the beautiful balance between intrigue, characters with depth and gentle romance.

NOT To Be Missed, Dickerson Pens Another Winner!!

I don’t know how she does it, but each of Dickerson’s fairytale retellings are wonderful stories that keep getting better and better! The Beautiful Pretender only took about three chapters to grab my full attention and then I couldn’t put it down. I stayed up WAY past my bedtime eagerly turning the pages on my kindle with this one. Loved Avelina right away and was amazed by her strength, discernment, faith, and courage throughout. This is the SECOND time Dickerson had my heart melting for a beastly/gruff character, this one named Lord Thornbeck, the first time was Lord Ranulf in The Merchant’s Daughter. I highly recommend BOTH books!!
No one writes heroes like Dickerson does and it’s crazy how much I enjoyed The Beautiful Pretender from START to FINISH; she remains one of my favorite authors with her incredible storytelling skills filling the pages with intrigue, danger, betrayal, courage, faith, adventure, and romance. Avelina and Reinhart risk everything to do what’s right and my heart was with them the whole time.

Wow, what a wonderful and exciting fairy tale Melanie Dickerson has weaved. She had me hooked right from the start and did not let go till the end. I caught myself trying to read faster to see what was going to happen next. I caught myself laughing, tears in my eyes, and even holding my breath several times. I had thought Melanie Dickerson could not pen better, but was I wrong. She did not disappoint me. Ms Dickerson has weaved a story and a cast of characters that will keep you turning those pages and wanting more.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the author for my honest review.
