Colorful patterns, inspiring and very readable!
By L. Chang
WOW - what a wonderful needlework book - I love everything about it. One of the neatest things about this book is it's not just oriented to one type of stitching - there are patterns for cross stitch as well as instructions for using decorative needlepoint stitches as an option. The projects are all beautifully presented with color charts.
Those of you that like traditional and historical patterns will find a lot to do in here. There are cushions, brick covers, a pretty stand up Angel figure, purse, handbag and much more. Just looking at the pictures gets the fingers itching to stitch!!
Wonderful color pictures and a very readable text of background info on all - Holly knows her historical needlework sources. I recommend this book highly.

I might give this 3 stars as I don't think I'll ever use it; but its history of Winterthur is valuable

I learned a lot about this fabled museum I'd never heard before. It is one of Delaware's claims to fame and is the most valuable museum in the in the world for its collections of American antiques dating from 1640 to 1860. I had no idea how big it was: it sits on more than 900 acres with many gardens. Its format is unique: the collections are not set up in display cases in a static museum but set up realistically in 175 rooms with antiques in contemporary settings to show off the items of utility along with the priceless works of art that grace each room. The whole property was first owned by E. I. du Pont de Nemours, land acquired between 1810 and 1818. It was passed on to his daughter Evelina Gabrielle du Pont and her husband James Antoine Bidermann in 1837. They named it after the town Winterthur, Switzerland and I never before understood that this is pronounced "Winter-tour" in the Swiss fashion. I'm not sure how he was a "du Pont" such as the name survived as it was left to Biden's nephew, Henry Algernon du Pont who bequeathed it to his son, the famed Henry Francis du Pont in 1926. He had begun collecting mostly American antiques in 1923 because they were being given short shrift in the art world. He raised his family in homes filled with the antique items where the children were taught care of such objects but not to the extent that the things mattered more than they did. Henry opened the museum to the public in 1951 and it remains a cherished site of study and appreciation of fine art. He required the very highest value in the acquisition of each piece and its authentic placement in a given room: for example, in the baroque, rococo, oriental and neo-classical rooms he required that every single item be fitting in its setting. He logged every single piece down to the smallest ones and paid enormous attention to the exactitude of placement to make the rooms as authentic as possible.
Author Hollis Greer Minor has been commissioned by the Art Institute of Chicago, Winterthur, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Smithsonian Institution to adapt well over 300 designs based on the art and portraiture of their collections. Her company is famous world widee and she has sold hundreds of thousands of designs and kits in the US alone.
Now, to be honest, I dislike most of these designs. So many are images derived from paintings of people of a given era which I find too simplistic. However, look at the bargellow pillow on the cover. I like it!! I'm not interesting in making the plethora of rugs or the brick cover (usually used as a door stop). I'm not even a needlepointer. But these designs would be easily transferred to cross stitch, even miniature pieces that could be appropriate for a doll house. I tend more toward wall pictures than pillows or picture frames or purses. However, the several Christmas stockings are interesting. And the 3-dimensional angel on the cover, with front and back of the angle sewn together is quite pretty.
So many projects are already in the works or my on waiting list that its not likely any of these projects will take center stage. But very likely you will find something that strikes your fancy if you're at all interesting in historic pieces. The directions for making up the projects and stitches are pretty well explained and it's really valuable to have a conversion chart for colors in these brands: the author's own It's Polite to Point (her shop) Heirloom Quality Persian wool, Anchor and DMC floss, Appleton, Paternayan and Wool Masters Persian wool.

Wonderful Christmas projects here as well as many others
By Susan Daniel
I think this is a wonderful book!! If you want to make a gorgeous and very traditional treetop angel for your Christmas tree, look no further. This one is perfect and you could not find a better one. There are also two great charts for tradtional Christmas stockings. They are for smaller stockings. Especially wonderful are the designs that take after the famous "Fishing Lady " Samplers. This book is a must for your needlework library.
