From School Library Journal
Grade 6-10--This encyclopedia presents the origins, lifestyles, and culture of the various ethnic groups that populate the U.S., Canada, and, to a lesser extent, Mexico. Articles are organized alphabetically and cover both the ethnic groups and "immigration related and cross-cultural subjects." These include such topics as personal names, music, literature, industry, and employment. The unsigned articles vary in length and scope and are somewhat uneven. Certain entries, for example, feature maps that show both the areas in North America that the group has settled as well as the location of their country of origin. Other entries only include a North American population distribution map. Similarly, the scope of the information presented varies from article to article, although every effort is made to provide consistent information on the major immigration/emigration themes. In general, the writing is clear and neutral in tone. The appealing layout features numerous maps and color photographs. Multitoned insets offer statistics and additional, often fascinating, information. Each entry also lists suggested Web sites. The same glossary, index, time line, and list of suggestions for further reading are repeated in each volume. Despite some minor shortcomings, this will be a highly useful reference tool for students studying immigration.--Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, New York City

From Booklist
A multitude of native peoples and immigrant groups have populated North America throughout the centuries. This encyclopedia, geared to upper-elementary through senior-high students, is a survey of the North American population at the start of the twenty-first century and profiles well-established ethnic groups, relatively recent immigrants, and indigenous peoples who "survive in significant numbers."

Approximately 200 distinct groups appear alphabetically (Afghans to West Africans). Entries range in length from two or three paragraphs (Afghans, Ecuadoreans, Greenlanders, Hispanic Americans) to eight pages (African Americans). Additional entries examine topics such as Agriculture, Music, Racial prejudice and racial theories, and Religion from a cross-cultural perspective. Each entry contains a "Fact File" of special boxes that provide facts about key people, immigration history (first immigrants and dates of major arrivals.) common names, typical jobs held in North America, dominant religions, festivals, languages, national or traditional foods, and population statistics. (The 2000 U.S. Census or the 1996 Canadian Census is utilized for this data, unless otherwise specified). A distribution map shows states and cities where major communities live today and often the region of origin. Boxes listing Web sites and community organizations provide links to additional resources. A listing of see also references at the end of each article helps students locate related articles throughout the set. Color and black-and-white photographs, all featuring captions, appear throughout.

Each volume concludes with a one-page set glossary, resources for further reading, a brief immigration time line from 1492 ("Christopher Columbus sails to North America") through 2003 ("U.S. forces attack Iraq"), and a set index. A useful look at Native North Americans by region is included in volumes 7 and 8.

The brevity of the fact boxes means that some, especially those dealing with jobs and food, have data that seem overly generalized and even stereotypical. Although this is often balanced by more detailed information in the text, students will be likely to turn to the fact boxes first as convenient sources of information.

Though different in arrangement (by country rather than ethnic group), the excellent 11-volume Peoples of the Americas (Marshall Cavendish, 1999) is similar in scope and more comprehensive, including both Central and South America as well as offering several highly useful indexes. Peoples of North America is accessible and provides information that students will find useful when completing school assignments. School and public libraries that need a reference source focused solely on North America will find this purchase serviceable. RBB
