A timely and relevant look at Greek tragedy -- and a pleasure to read

This is a great read if you are interested in theatre and/or classics -- or if you want to be. Rehm's readings of Greek tragedy bring out much of the best this genre has to offer: gut-wrenching action, the beauty of words, and bigger questions about who we are and our place in the world. If over time you have gotten the impression that Greek tragedy is as dusty as the old translated editions from grade school, antiquited stage reproductions featuring ill-fitting togas, or flat Hollywood knockoffs, then this book will shake a few things up. Radical Theatre brings the questions that tragedy poses into a fully contemporary, shockingly relevant framework and convincingly argues that Greek tragedy does, indeed, still matter.
To readers with a more specialized interest in classics or classical theatre, this book offers thoughful and persuasive challenges to assumptions that scholars have often settled on over the years about tragedy's civic functions, Athenian nature, and fundamentally conservative, elite point of view.
