Seems like he took some shortcuts!

I lead a women's Bible Study and MacArthur's name was intimidating to us because of his reputation but we were excited for a challenging look at the Exodus. His commentary on the verses is adequate but he skips a lot of chapters in Exodus so there are several weeks that you don't have a proper context of what is happening without going back to read those. Most of his questions just require you to restate what he just wrote about. A few of them have you think about more personal application. He NEVER has you look up other passages of scripture in the questions to have a better context and understanding. He references some in his commentary but not enough to really give a thorough picture of how the New Covenant replaces the Old in a beautiful, complete way. Several of us have thought that he is probably taking old sermons and just choosing the main points out of them and turning them into questions. The reason for the 1 star though is because we are in the 10th week, studying Numbers 20 where Moses struck the rock instead of obeying God's words to just speak to it. In his commentary, he has an entire paragraph dedicated to comparing the rock that was STRUCK (in Exodus 17:6) to Christ. This is an fantastic analogy but the rock in Numbers wasn't to be struck and Macarthur never pointed us back to the passage in Exodus. Overall, we haven't had too many disagreements with what he has said but the depth is lacking. I have had to supplement with a lot of extra information to teach this topic thoroughly and to have more meaningful connections than Macarthur makes. Sorry for the long review-I'm hoping it helps someone else when they are going through the difficult process of choosing what to study. though.
