Seems like he took some shortcuts!

I lead a women's Bible Study and MacArthur's name was intimidating to us because of his reputation but we were excited for a challenging look at the Exodus. His commentary on the verses is adequate but he skips a lot of chapters in Exodus so there are several weeks that you don't have a proper context of what is happening without going back to read those. Most of his questions just require you to restate what he just wrote about. A few of them have you think about more personal application. He NEVER has you look up other passages of scripture in the questions to have a better context and understanding. He references some in his commentary but not enough to really give a thorough picture of how the New Covenant replaces the Old in a beautiful, complete way. Several of us have thought that he is probably taking old sermons and just choosing the main points out of them and turning them into questions. The reason for the 1 star though is because we are in the 10th week, studying Numbers 20 where Moses struck the rock instead of obeying God's words to just speak to it. In his commentary, he has an entire paragraph dedicated to comparing the rock that was STRUCK (in Exodus 17:6) to Christ. This is an fantastic analogy but the rock in Numbers wasn't to be struck and Macarthur never pointed us back to the passage in Exodus. Overall, we haven't had too many disagreements with what he has said but the depth is lacking. I have had to supplement with a lot of extra information to teach this topic thoroughly and to have more meaningful connections than Macarthur makes. Sorry for the long review-I'm hoping it helps someone else when they are going through the difficult process of choosing what to study. though.

I like this book for the charming heart projects. I loved the keepsake heart which I made in variations many times. I love working with wool and felt and yo-yos. The ideas have a sweet and gentle look. I wish the patterns were full sized.

Loved all the projects in the book. I have already started one of them and am anxious to start another. The book has good pictures and patterns. I understand why the patterns had to be reduced, because there are so many. Would recommend to those who enjoy simple hand or machine sewing.

Great projects, tiny patterns

When you read through this book you are struck by how cute the projects are. Then you turn to the patterns and templates section and realize that the sizes of the projects (like the one on the front) are TINY! That isn't apparent from the photos. I read everywhere in the book, thinking that maybe I was supposed to enlarge these patterns, but found that they really were supposed to be that small. I enlarged the pattern anyway, but of course then the yardage requirements were all wrong. There are some projects that are life-size, but several of the small pillows are doll-sized. That was disappointing.

The authors of these two books approach watercolor with radically different philosophies. Smith believes firmly in painting in direct contact with nature: he believes that painters should either complete their work on-site or, at the least, return to the studio with sufficient sketches and color notes. His loose, atmospheric brushwork, limited palette, and carefully described methods are sure to please anyone interested in the traditional British landscape style of painting. This is a good companion to Jack Reid's excellent Watercolor Basics: Let's Get Started (LJ 12/98). Seslar, a contributing editor to the Artist's Magazine, has produced the first comprehensive watercolor book for beginners on working from photographs. The advantage to his method is that it trains the eye to visualize the transition of live objects to luminous paint on paper. He surveys different methods of photography and the uses of grids and pantographsAand, finally, provides 12 nicely varied demonstrations. Highly recommended, perhaps in conjunction with reference works like Bart Rulon's Artist's Photo Reference: Birds (LJ 3/15/99).

Happily motivated

This better than as I was hoping for. After reading just the first page I started getting motivated to paint. Now that I've finished the book I can't wait to start!
I've even decided to devote time to cleaning out and organizing a room to turn it into an arts and crafts studio!

Beginner's Book Best for Those Who Admire the Author's Paintings

I'm a beginning watercolor painter who is teaching myself by reading books and experimenting. Before reading this I read Ray Campbell Smith's Way with Watercolor and loved it but it was not a beginner's book covering all the basics. When I saw this I wanted to read what he had to say to beginners specifically, so I read this cover to cover.

Ray Campbell Smith is a painter of landscapes using fresh simple strokes. The advice he gives for how to paint watercolors reflect his personal preference combined with good practical advice. The book has a serious tone; it's not casual and touchy-feely as some other books on the market are. I personally like both types so am happy to get different advice from different artist authors.

After saying that you learn a lot through experience and regular practice he shares more. Beginners need to know "the proper approach is to analyze the problems posed and think out ways of overcoming them". (pg. 10) The most important stage of all successful watercolor painting is the mental translation of the observed image into watercolor terms and this is where skill and experience come into play." (pg. 10)

After general encouragement in the Introduction the chapters progress as it seems all beginner books do. He covers the topics of the paper and stretching, the brushes, using high quality paints, color theory, doing washes, and everything else that all the basic beginner books cover. The chapters on composition and perspective are basic information you may know from elsewhere but the author still peppers in tips and tidbits that make reading the chapters worthwhile.

Regarding materials I liked his classification of them into two categories: expensive necessities and expensive frills. He gives a lot of practical advice for us to consider when choosing colors and scenes, such as not using too many colors which can confuse a painting and ruin it. He believes that using the same or a few colors lets them "hang together". He feels that landscape painters should be subtle and understated to give a good visual effect.

The author shares his favorite paper, brushes, and paints. The issue with the recommendations of the brush sizes is they are correct for the canvas use he uses, so beginners need to keep that in mind. He advises to try different paper but to stay with your favorite so you can get to know it well. The same goes for the brushes. I completely agree with this advice.

I appreciated the encouragement and warnings to beginners such as to avoid picking a too complicated subject or picking a too-wide landscape, two common beginner mistakes. We are advised to look for good composition scenes rather than cliché things we think will sell. We are told to take time to get a feel for the subject, and to develop our personal style. Don't pick the obvious angle.

"When an artist has studied his subject profoundly and made an effort to look beneath the surface, his painting will have far greater depth. It will reveal something of what he felt and this can invest the most ordinary subject with magic." (pg 67) That is the type of excellent wise advice that is peppered through this book in between the more basic beginner's tips that you may have heard elsewhere, which makes reading this book worthwhile.

There is a lot of practical advice and I took copious notes. I learned a lot by reading this book and can't recommend it highly enough so long as you appreciate the style of painting that Ray Campbell Smith does.

Landscapes can be exciting.

Though I've painted in watercolor for several years, landscapes were never very interesting to me..... until I discovered this book. The skies are wonderful and so is the water. Trees are simplified in their execution. The limited palette Mr. Smith uses appeals to me and will create wonderful colors for any outside scene. So, for me, the title of this book could also say "A Practical Guide for Beginners & Improvers & THOSE SEEKING NEW DIRECTIONS."

Johnny Hunt is the general editor of The Gift of Jesus, part of the MyDaily® Devotional series that has sold more than 550,000 copies. Hunt is the former president of the Southern Baptist Convention. Pastor Johnny’s educational credits include a BA in religion from Gardner-Webb College. He continued on to Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned a Master of Divinity in 1981. Southeastern honored Pastor Johnny in 1997 by naming The Chair of Biblical Preaching in his honor in 1997. He has also received several honorary doctorates over the years for his work in ministry. Hunt and his wife, Janet, enjoy their two daughters, Deanna Carswell and Hollie Hixson, and 4 grandchildren.

Works well to get you through Psalm, Proverbs, and Eccelsiastes in 1 year.

I had been looking for a Psalm and Proverbs reading plan/book, and just happened to find this book in the store. You will read through the book of Psalm--1 Jan-3 Sept, then Proverbs--4 Sept-28 Nov, and finally Ecc--29 Nov-29 Dec.
There are days built in for reflection where you answer a few short questions and the end which is a note/prayer from the author. The translation used is NKJV except for 1 day where they use the NLT. I prefer that translation or the NIV over the NKJV, but it's okay. Overall, this will be a good devotional to supplement other reading plans. I'm going in depth into the NT, but couldn't figure out how to incorporate Psalm and Proverbs. This book does the trick. Thanks!

Wonderful Daily Reminders of God's Wisdom

This is a nice product. The daily messages are encouraging. Since the messages are linked with scripture, this is a Biblically based book, and not someone's opinions or fluffy imaginings. The psalms are used for illustrations of God's protection and caring about our lives. Although the cover is not leather, it's close enough to seem like it. At the price, it makes a wonderful gift. In a world where strong opinions seem to be everywhere, resulting in much unrest and division, it's important to turn to God's wisdom. It's that which never changes, and can be relied on for true encouragement.

About the Author
Jane Harrop started making miniatures as a hobby nine years ago, when she made and demonstrated the projects at her local miniatures group - her enthusiasm turned this hobby into her job. She has been teaching adult education classes for the past five years, and has had articles published in Dolls' House World magazine. Jane sells her work through local miniatures fairs to both collectors and the trade, and is presenting workshops at the 2002 British Miniature weekend fair. This is Jane's first book. Jane is married with two children, and lives in Poynton, Cheshire.

I love this book

I love this book. I am not really into dollhouses but I bought it for ideas and to see how these things are made. The items look very fidly to make but I expect all things for miniatures are.
The only problem I have is that I live in Australia and I don't have a clue where to get some of the wood and a few other things from as the suppliers are English or American. You get use to this.
As soon as I figure out where to get these things from I will have a go at making a few things.

Great instructions and color photos.

The only reason I didn't give this one five stars is because of there aren't too many projects provided which are very simple to make. It is not that they are difficult, but rather, very time consuming for each one. I thought some toys/games that are very quick and easy for the mini crafter to make should have been included. I also was hoping for some more dolls' dolls projects, but there was only one project and I thought some Victorian dolls' dolls would have been nice. This book is great for someone looking for cute toys to make for the dollhouse. Also, the author provides lots of historical accuracy in terms of when such toys were popular. This was great information to include as most dollhouse miniature crafters want to create accessories for their dollhouse which are appropriate for the period/style of their miniature home.

I needed a translator (fortunately,my son knows an English exchange student) to figure out what the supplies were,then I had to find a supplier. Some of the projects are a bit too complex for me,and I wish it had more polymer clay,and less wood. It is well written and easy to follow for the most part. I wish in the book previews of craft books they would show more than the first chapter/section,because that is almost always tools and techniques and you don't get to see the projects at all.

You could use this book either to make the quilts she shows, or as an idea book. Porter gives detailed instructions for making quilts based on floor tiles, including pieced and fused techniques. It's one of those books that seems like a "niche" idea but actually teaches techniques of design, composition, and construction that can be used in many different ways. The pictures are clear and inspiring.

after seeing the author on simply quilts, i decided this book would be worth checking out. so much so, i bought it.

the quilts are fabulous. some of the designs used extremely advanced piecing techniques to reproduce equally advanced tile and mosaid techniques. some quilts are shown in natural colors to recall the marble, and then in funky wild combinations to show that the designs are great as designs, not just as a floor design.

not perhaps for the absolute beginner, there are some patterns a quilter with one or two projects accomplished could make.
