Awesome book if you like looking at paranormal photos

A lot of the photos in this book are from ghoststudy's website & soem are from other sites on the web, but I prefer looking at photos on paper. There are stories to go along with the photos, it's not a "picture book". I recommend it if you're into ghost photography or if you just like the paranormal.

I think I would have preferred more content...

I follow my local library's new books in circulation via an RSS feed. So when the book The Paranormal Caught On Film by Dr. Melvyn Willin showed up, I though it might be a fun few hours of reading. In reality, it wasn't much more than about 90 minutes of pictures and commentary that in the end didn't do much more me one way or the other.

The book is 141 pages of pictures and commentary on photographs that purport to show paranormal activity or beings. They are classed into the categories of Ghostly Figures, Strange Lights & Apparitions, Simulacra, The Unexplained - Poltergeists & Other Phenomena, and Back From The Dead. The layout of the book is small, usually with a picture on one page and the commentary on the opposing side. To Willin's credit, he doesn't attempt to defend each and every picture as authentic. In fact, he usually states the case for both sides of the argument of "staged" or "real". It's even more surprising given that he's a paranormal researcher, and you'd expect some bias towards one end of the spectrum. The pictures range from old turn of the century shots to camera phone clicks that ended up showing more than the phone owner originally saw. Based on what type of picture it is, Willin is realistic as to what normal events could have happened to create the image. Some are very explainable, while others are much less so.

While the pictures were interesting, ultimately the book didn't do much for me. I'm more than willing to be open to the existence of "paranormal" phenomenon, so it's not as if I disagreed with the writer. I think it was more along the lines of the book being small, and the writer never really coming down on one side or the other on many of the images. In the end, I felt like I was looking at someone's personal photo album with a few comments thrown in. For a library read, it was good. But if I had paid money to purchase the book, I think I would have been very disappointed.

Don't waste your money....

The photos are poor quality.... and few .... this book is not worth the money. I was totally disappointed. All of the pictures are available on the Internet. The author's comments do not include any enlightening information.

Gloriously presented in full colour throughout, the patterns are clearly illustrated and explained together with photographs of the finished result. An introduction to each project by McCready herself gives her thoughts on the subjects and the inspiration behind them. A short synopsis of techniques is included at the rear, again clearly illustrated and succinctly pertinent.. More aimed at experienced needlepersons, this would make a wonderful gift for lovers of McCready's designs and Ehrman tapestries. About the Author
Elian McCready is an artist working in textile embroidery. After gaining a BA in Fine Art and photography, she discovered the medium of pictorial woven tapestry. On winning the Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship in 1985, she visited Egypt and has remained strongly influenced by its colourful free woven tapestry murals. After a period working for Kaffe Fasset, Elian became self-employed and since 1991 has designed needlepoint kits for the renowned Ehrman Kits company, establishing herself as one of their leading designers. She lives in Conwy, North Wales.

This is a wonderful book, but be careful. It is the same book as the hardcover that Amazon is listing as a great book to get WITH this one. They have the same title, but the cover changed with the paperback.

My favorite book on needlepoint

I have books by Graham Rust, Candace Bahouth, Kaffe Fassett, Beth Russell among other notable designers in needlepoint and this is the only one that I want to do every design in the book. The charts are easy to read, with symbols in addition to being colored. I wouldn't recommend it for a true beginner, but it is a fantastic book.

George W. O'Bannon was a legendary figure in the oriental rug community and he was taken from us at much too young an age. He was a knowledgeable man, especially about all things Turkoman, as well as wise.

This book may be somewhat dated by the wealth of information that came into print years after the publication of this book especially with the "Turkomania" that followed the Textile Museums famous show on Turkoman weaving but it is nonetheless a valuable book that has a lot to teach. The focus of the book is modern Turkoman weaving and can almost be seen as a time capsule from the days when George was a rug dealer in Kabul.

George went on to be very active in helping to foster the appreciation of antique rugs for a new generation and his writing credits include being at one time the editor of "The Oriental Rug Review".

For the layman this book will give insight into a new world. For the collector this book offers some great wisdom.

Anthony Foottit writes not only of the plants and blooms, but adds scripture and religious story-illustrations that relate to each chapter's selection of nature. Most of the spiritual notations are Christian, Catholic to be exact. There are some notations related to Jewish, Buddhism, and Muslim faith as well (but minimally.)

This is not a scientific endeavor to instruct on the complete wildflower potential. It covers only 56 (arranged seasonally), and primarily focuses on plants of the UK, although a number grow in the U.S. as well. "The Gospel of Wild Flowers" is more of an attempt to mingle God's creation with God's word, and the beauty is added with the illustrations in watercolor. Only 21 pages were without color illustrations. Not a text, but an inspiration to the naturalist, gardener, or outdoors lover. A great, easily read, book to be used as a gift. That's how I received it, a gift from my wife, since I am a seeker of God's creations.

I enjoyed the new facts like picking up British names for some of the American plants, inspirational verses to got with a bloom, finding the occasional small insect or butterfly tucked into the plant watercolor, and the fresh different look at common varieties like dandelions and thistles.

I bought this for Pat Albeck's wildflower watercolors, which are beautiful. The window into various aspects of Anglican faith and practice is an interesting bonus, and I enjoy it.

From the rather bland titles one might think that these were two indistinguishable basic drawing books. Fortunately, they are two very different animals. Bays, a cheerful artist from the south of England, assumes that the student may know nothing more about drawing than printing the alphabet. Jackson writes for the artist, or would-be-artist, who already has a developed sense of line and form. The differences are apparent from the start: Bays's first chapter is called "Making Marks" and covers, obviously, making marks on paper. Jackson's first chapter, "Perception," offers sophisticated exercises in perceptual processes and methods of translating observation into drawings. Jackson stretches the boundaries of drawing into full color and multimedia. Both books are worthwhile purchases, but for different audiences: Bays for beginners, and Jackson for advanced students.

Nice workbook for practice

Yes, this book is very nice. It is a handy for sitting down with your sketch book and building your confidence. There are plenty of very nice examples of how to achieve the modern look of sketching and water color wash. Other mediums are covered and there is a good introduction to ink wash technique as well. It is a small book but good for a beginner who may be intimidated by where to start. Follow the 10 lessons and you will not feel so intimidated anymore.

This is a Fantastic book to practice drawing and not have to think about what to draw but getting used to the idea of drawing and what steps to take. It is well written and the KEY! EASY TO FOLLOW!!

Great Starter Book

A no surprise, excellent purchase. The book was in pristine shape, with no marks or scuff marks that one might expect on a used book. Price was very reasonable and was received in a well wrapped parcel.
My wife wanted this book for our granddaughter - she found this one of the best books to start a young artist on.
Very east to follow, steps are basic to intermediate with lots of helpful hints.

I truly enjoyed every chapter

Really interesting book! I truly enjoyed every chapter. There are some examples with animal experiments which is disheartening, but overall some really helpful descriptions as well as text boxes with further information, such as ethics or technological advances.
Highly recommend (I kept it rather than selling it back).

About the Author

From a very young age, one of Neven Maguire's favourite pastimes was to shadow his mother in the kitchen, watching her cook. He began experimenting with ingredients in the home kitchen at the tender age of ten and his pastime soon became his passion.

After studying catering in Fermanagh College in Enniskillen, Neven went on to train in some of the highest-profile restaurants in the world, including the Michelin starred Roscoff's in Belfast, Grand Hotel in Berlin and Arzak in San Sebastian. He also worked with Lea Linster, the renowned Michelin starred chef from Luxembourg, whom he credits as a major influence.

In 2001, Neven took over MacNean Restaurant, turning a local establishment into a national phenomenon and in 2012 published the highly acclaimed MacNean Restaurant Cookbook. Neven presents the top-rated cookery show on RTE, Home Chef. He lives in Blacklion, Co Cavan with his wife Amelda, and twins Connor and Lucia.
