This is a good biopsychology textbook and a good reference book for basic brain-behavior science. After using this book for years, I gave it to a friend who regularly uses it as a desk reference in her work as a therapist working with individuals with brain injuries.

Not the best physio book

I used this book in undergrad and, although the pictorial illustrations in the book were useful, overall I found this book to be more confusing than need be. They were overly vague in areas where it wasn't necessary, yet would go into detail in areas that were not key points. I would not recommend this text for a physio psych book. I have since found other books, such as Carlson's Foundations book, that I would much rather use in my classes.

A good resource for cathedral windows - one of the few

Cathedral window quilts have a unique and fascinating construction method, unlike any other quilt. Instead of layers of backing and batting and a pieced top, they are traditionally constructed of squares of muslin, folded into several layers and sewn together by hand. On top of this base, gracefully curving bias folds are turned and stitched to make "frames" over inserts of colorful fabric "windows." I first became interested in cathedral windows several years ago, and I've looked far and wide for instructions. Some can be found (with effort) on the Internet, but they are inconsistent and sometimes incomplete or sloppy. Laura Nownes' Cathedral Window (Classic Quilt Series, No. 5) is a nice technical resource, but it's been replaced by this book as my favorite resource. The instructions and illustrations are very detailed and clear; and there are several fascinating variations included. The book steps you through from the simplest pincushion project to larger and more elaborate pillows and wall hangings. Instructions are given for either hand- or machine-stitching each step of the construction of the base squares. Stitching the inserts is always done by hand.

The biggest problem I ran into in this book is the technique described for stitching in the inserts. She uses a technique of a backstitch on the surface of the fabric, which leaves a line of tiny dots of thread along the edge of each frame; omitting the (at least to my mind) much more elegant method of using applique stitch - tiny stitches that just catch the very edge of the frames and are more or less invisible. I personally feel that the method given in the book is inferior, hence not giving it a 5-star review. (This is, after all, a crucial step in the quilt's construction!)

Another, more minor, complaint is the high-falutin' attitude of the author when she speaks very dismissively of the traditional materials, questioning why one would want to use 'plain calico' (the UK term for muslin) when there are so many beautiful quilting fabrics out there. Well, strictly from a practical standpoint, these unique quilts require a lot of fabric - probably about three times as much as a traditional quilt. The queen-size quilt I'm planning would require around 20 yards of 45-inch-wide fabric. At roughly $10 to $12 a yard for quality quilting fabric (and who knows how much for the silks the author uses heavily), that's a lot of cash to lay down, even if you're going to be using scraps for the inserts. Muslin is certainly much more affordable, at least for a bed-size quilt. (However, I should note that there do not appear to be any bed-size projects in the book.) Not only that, some of us do prefer a more traditional aesthetic!

The bottom line is, I think this book is well worth buying if you're interested in making projects with the cathedral window techniques. My personal advice, though, would be to research hand-applique techniques and use those to stitch down the window frames - or at least try both ways and see which you prefer!

This book is truly beautiful. The quilts are breathtaking! I found the directions almost too complete in that they are quite wordy, but if you take each step very carefully, you'll have a perfect cathedral window. You won't be disappointed.

Great Book, Wonderful use of fabrics

I loved the wonderful use of fabrics that were used in creating the quilts in the book. Makes me want to make one now. I haven't tried any of the patterns yet but I am going to as soon as I get some other projects finished.
This book seems well written, many photos of how to make the blocks as well as finished projects for inspiration.

My Little Prayers is the newest book in the My Little® series from Tommy Nelson.

My Little Prayers is a compact book of prayers (both traditional and modern) covering a variety of topics: My Day, My Mealtime, My Bedtime, My Family and Friends, My Favorite Things, My Feelings, My Special Days, and My Time with God. Each of the 8 topics have their own section in the book, and each section is introduced with a verse.

Each two-page spread in My Little Prayers has a prayer (or verse) on the left-hand page and an illustration on the right-hand page. The illustrations are cute and I enjoyed the diversity in the people depicted (age, gender, and race).

Prayer books are not a new idea, but I loved that My Little Prayers contains a compilation of not only modern prayers, but traditional prayers as well.

My Little Prayers is a cute, useful book and is a great way to introduce children to a variety of prayers.

Perfect Bite Sized Prayers in a Book Perfect for Little Hands.

This My Little Prayers book is absolutely precious. It's perfect for little hands and beautifully illustrated. It's compiled with a wide variety of traditional prayers and non-traditional prayers that help little ones navigate through prayer in a variety of situations such as feelings, bedtime, mealtime, family and friends, favorite things, their day, special time with God and special days.

The illustrations beautifully coincide with the prayers giving little ones a beautiful visual to go alongside with the prayer. For example, the Christmas prayer by Martin Luther is paired with a child drawing a photo of a baby in a manger.

My little ones loves reading the prayers. Sometimes we pray one prayer and other times we read through a couple depending on the day and what she wants to do. I really enjoy that she is loves this book and find pieces and parts of the prayers sprinkled within her own prayers.

Wonderful book to help children pray

My Little Prayers is a cushioned hard cover book for children, especially toddlers and preschoolers. It has 32 prayers and 9 bible verses. There are 8 different types of prayers including prayers for meals, bedtime and for family and friends. Each prayer has a cute picture to go with it . Some prayers are traditional prayers children have been saying for years. The prayers include songs and poems as well.
This is a really cute book, it is the perfect size for little children. The cover is very durable and easily cleaned. The pictures are really cute and help with interacting with the children. The traditional prayers in this book were some of my children’s favorites when they were little. It is a great book to use at prayer time to help teach little children about praying to God as well as thanking God for family, friends and things the child has been given. This would make a great gift for a child. I will be recommending this to others and will be using it for gifts.

Adorable projects for people who love all things British

My daughter, because of early exposure to the Doctor and Masterpiece Theatre, loves all things British. She also loves to knit and can be often found drinking tea and knitting in the evening while watching one of the Masterpiece shows on PBS. So this book is one she was super excited about getting.

Starting with the introduction, this is just charming. The introduction includes information about yarn and needles with US equivalents. There are whimsical jokes through out all the text even in the supplies lists. Also in the introduction is some slang, like gubbins to refer to the supplies you'll need to make the projects.

The projects aren't just the toys shown on the front, there are more practical projects like mug cozies, laptop socks and messenger bag flap decorations. The toys are done small scale using smaller DPNs. While a lot of them are listed as being difficult, they aren't really. You'll need to know how to increase, decrease, make i-cord and work with DPNs. Included in the book, in the front cover is a kit for making a pigeon, you'll supply the stuffing, it has cute little dpns, yarn, beads and pipe cleaner.

I loved the brolly decorations, little charms to hang off the end of the spokes of an umbrella including little skulls, and darling little raindrops. Suggestions in a box on the page say they would be good for jewelry too which is what I thought of seeing the little soft knit charms. My daughter loved the telephone box, which can easily be made in blue to be a little soft TARDIS.

The toys include landmarks, the queen, and that wonderful palace guard. Little animals include a very cute fat little fox that my daughter plans to make for her brother, the pigeon and others.
Cute plarn bugs knit up in nothing flat, and the mug cozies have a few cute variations.

While it may be too simple for some knitters, this was a perfect book for my daughter. Everything is easily within her skill set, and the London theme and quirkiness makes her very happy.

'patterns aren't fancy-schmancy and they don't require you to be a sage at knitting',

Written by an American, I (a Brit) was quite taken with this little book. It includes the raw materials to get you started knitting a pigeon. Then there's patterns for London landmarks (Big Ben, Tower Bridge and a phone box) and Little Londoners (the Queen plus corgis, a policeman and a soldier in his bearskin).
Things then start to get a little bit more tenuous in their links with London - a stripey scarf in the colors used on Underground maps; book covers for when you're reading on the Tube (I rather liked the idea of a cover in the old orange Penguin colorway!); a laptop sock with skill and crossbones which seemed irrelevant as did the mug-huggers (links given were that Londoners drink a lot of tea. And use rhyming slang, so the frog shaped one represents 'frog and toad' (=road).
There are some cute little London critters- a raven and an Underground mouse (think that should be rat!) and fox.
Also some little pendants to fix to your necessary umbrella. I liked the little raindrops, one on the end of each spoke.
This might have more novelty for foreigners to whom London is somewhere exotic. But I really liked it too and it would be great for a teenager just starting out knitting.

This is a fun book! and the kit is a nice surprise. All patterns are open to variation (which I admire) and it shows a lot of freedom with it not looking too professional

I took a chance thinking how can she trump Jesus Calling, well she did. You can tell this is a spiritual labor of love. The anointing and energy that had to be in the room when she wrote this must have been amazing. Just buy this and g8ft it to friends in need

Another awesome Sarah Young devotional

I was anxiously waiting the release of this devotional and this did not disappoint me. Sarah Young has a way with writing devotions as if it was Jesus speaking to us himself. I have every one of her devotionals and am thoroughly invested into this devotional and look forward to reading it every day. It is paired with the appropriate scripture and inspires me each day.
