Somewhat Disappointed

I bought this book wanting to make glorious doll clothes like those shown on the cover. It was a bit of a let down, because you had to have the actual dolls to size the clothes on. Directions might read "measure the dolls waist and add a half an inch". I ended up selling the book to a doll shop owner because it did not fit my needs.

A Versitale, Unique, and Lovely Book

I checked out this book from a local library and am now looking to own her second book. I love the historical accuracy of the patterns, the variety of dolls and sizes, the details and how it includes instructions for the complete look, not just the clothes on top. It includes historical details about what type of fabric and what color certain garments would be made out of, and patterns for the dress, the bloomers, the camisole, the slippers, and the hat! I own a modern doll and with a little adjustment I was able to make some really beautiful garments for my doll based on these patterns and instructions.

Christina Harris' "The Dolls' Clothes Collection" is a delight. She goes into detail from undergarments to outer garments. I like that she takes the pattern a step further to show a completely different look from the same pattern. Patterns start in the 1800's thru the 1950's. The nautical look is always a classic. One of my favorite resource books.

About the Author

Fearghal McGarry is Reader in Irish History at Queen s University Belfast. He has written widely on Irish history. His books include The Rising. Ireland: Easter 1916, Eoin O Duffy: A Self-Made Hero and Rebels: Voices from the Easter Rising, which has been adapted for the stage by Jimmy Murphy for the Abbey Theatre. He has worked extensively on the revolutionary period and is a contributor to a number of 1916 centenary projects, including An Post s GPO Witness History Interpretive Exhibition Centre.

Although not everyone will agree with the author’s assertion that "in shaping breasts, the bra has also shaped fashion and modern sex appeal," one thing that this lighthearted, sartorial tribute makes clear is that a more conscious appreciation of the underwire garment is in order. Pedersen (K.I.S.S. Guide to Beauty) traces the evolution of the bra, from ancient times when Minoan women flaunted their breasts in uplifting cutaway jackets, to the more modest (read imprisoning) years of the rib-snapping corset, to the "anything goes" attitude of contemporary fashion. The bra in its modern incarnation didn’t debut until the early 20th century—when Mary Phelps Jacob created one out of two silk handkerchiefs, some pink ribbon and thread, and subsequently nabbed the first U.S. patent in 1914—but Pedersen maintains that fashion and feminism owe much to the brassiere. She points out that as women began entering the workforce during WWI, the modern bra became indispensable because it granted female workers mobility and signified their independence. From then on, it was adapted to suit different fashions. In the ’20s, women used the bra to flatten themselves and achieve the androgynous figures of flappers and suffragettes, and a decade later, Lana Turner and her clingy cashmere and prominent breasts sparked a demand for "falsies." A plethora of pictures complement the text, including a photo of an old pin up and some tantalizing shots of models wearing sexy fantasy bras made of diamonds and other precious gems. In the end, it’s hard to say which crowd this mildly intriguing history will appeal to more—the women who wear the lingerie or the men who enjoy seeing them in it.

Pedersen is excellent researcher

Although the cover insinuates tittilation, the information packed into this book is historically accurate and detailed, with photographs backing up information. The book is logically laid out and would be a perfect part of any woman's studies course or project for such a class. The presentation is such that this would also make a conversational coffee table book - espcially when combined with other Pedersen books like "Shoes". Highly recommended.

History made fashionable

Though this is a history of breast treatments (it includes binding and corsets which pre-date the bra), Bra: A Thousand Years of Style, Support & Seduction is also a social commentary, explaining what it must've been like to live in the various eras before our own. The art is amazing--and fun.
