Great Overview of Scholarship Undermines Argument

It's very clear that Katrina Cawthorn knows her scholarship on gender, sexuality, and the theater of ancient and classical Greece as well as a good deal about the Roman period. In order to make a strong argument you must deal with any counter evidence to your own theory and interpretation. A problem arises when that counter evidence outweighs your own. That's what has happened here.
There are a few assumptions that underline this study. The first is that the human body is seen as female and problematic in the classical world. The second is that all tragic playwrights have the same agenda. While the third is that the hero is equivalent to the average man in Athens. There are problems with each of these assumptions that I'll be exploring in a fuller review for a professional magazine but I want to point them out here for the layperson.
Ultimately this is a good study not because it proves that men are in danger of being feminized in tragedy but because it points out the complicated and flexible nature of gender in the ancient world through all it's citations and quoted texts or scholarship. It's a great start if you are interested in these subjects yourself.
I just wish the book would have gone farther -- expanding into the issue of gender in all of the dramatic performances and pieces -- or limited itself more to each playwright and what he wanted to accomplish. To me, either of those could have been more persuasive.
