Tabbies, Persians, Siamese, Angoras, and Oriental shorthairs cavort over cushions, door stops, wall hangings, bell pulls, greeting cards, trinket boxes, place mats--even a rug and a Christmas stocking. The beautiful full-color charts and accompanying photos capture the many moods of the feline persuasion at play and at rest, with well-chosen backgrounds to set off their colors, markings, and personalities. All the designs are worked in basic tent stitch, though the high level of detail necessitates some degree of needlework experience. All the grace and charm that makes cats so endearing shines through these striking designs. --Amy Handy

About the Author
Julie Hasler is a popular cross stitch designer and author of many books on the subject. She first became interested in cross stitch while recovering in hospital from a motorbike accident, and soon turned to creating her own designs. Since then her work has appeared in exhibitions, books, magazines and newspapers. Julie lives in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

Cats with Character to Make as Needlepoint

Cats are notoriously difficult animals to capture in art, and perhaps that is why cat lovers, like me, are so enchanted by a well-drawn picture of one. Having said that, needlepoint versions of cats which really capture their personalities are even more difficult to find. Julie Halser, a British needlepoint and cross stitch designer has managed to give us the treat of beautifully designed cats in her 1998 book, Needlepoint Cats.

Being a cat lover herself, Hasler abses each design on an actual cat. Zoe's Favorite Toy, for example, shows a black and white cat with a toy mouse being held to the ground by one paw. My favorite design of all, Jo Jo, shows a massive grey British shorthair, against a mostly purple patchwork design. Jo Jo looks exactly like one of my cats, even down to the serene face.

Another wonderful aspect of Hasler's designs is her way with backgrounds. No acres of single color backgrounds here; the designs include fields of flowers, a celestial background, Morris-style greenery, stained glass, and oriental rugs.

Designs in many sizes are included here as well from the tops of small trinket boxes to shaped pillows and rugs. One of my favorites is Peeping Tom a small round picture of a cats face. Framed with a wide mat, you can almost imagine this cat is looking through a peephole at you.

The book is clearly planned by a stitcher with exceptionally large, clear color charts, with a color key on the same page. The color numbers are given for the recommended thread. Along with an introductory chapter on basic techniques, there are helpful listings in the back of suppliers and a US/UK glossary to help with "translation."

From start ot finish, this is an outstanding project book.

Cat Lovers' Needlepoint

If you have at least intermediate needlepointing experience, you won't have any problems. However, beginners beware! The instructions for working the tent stitch on page 11 are appallingly incorrect. That aside, the charts are easy to read with a combination of color and symbols. Most of the backgrounds are repeats and would be easy to substitute for each other. The cats themselves are beautiful. Recommended for experienced needleworkers.

Julie Hasler has captured the heart of the cat lover. When I look at needlepoint books the first thing I look for is a design of a cat, and to think here is a book with no cutesy cats. Each design reminds one of some cat one has known. The only problem is deciding which to make first. Keep doing more books, Julie Hasler!

Jean Greenhowe is known for her fantastic toy-making and craft books, but this lovely book goes beyond that. Clear instructions, full-sized patterns are interspersed with funny rhymes and quirky songs that will charm and delight both maker and receiver. Colorful pictures of each doll, teddy bear, and stuffed animal helps users to see exactly what the outcome should look like. I highly recommend this book.

This is a pretty good book

This is a pretty good book, but if you have some of Greenhowe's other books, this one is a little redundant. As usual the instructions are clear and nice, and the patterns well made. There is a nice section of dolls made from stretch fabric, though, like clams, crab and a mermaid. There's also a nice Cowboy and Stereotyped Indian, as well as their stubby-legged horses. There is also a pair of pairs, Robin Hood and Maid Marion, which are nice.

Great Overview of Scholarship Undermines Argument

It's very clear that Katrina Cawthorn knows her scholarship on gender, sexuality, and the theater of ancient and classical Greece as well as a good deal about the Roman period. In order to make a strong argument you must deal with any counter evidence to your own theory and interpretation. A problem arises when that counter evidence outweighs your own. That's what has happened here.

There are a few assumptions that underline this study. The first is that the human body is seen as female and problematic in the classical world. The second is that all tragic playwrights have the same agenda. While the third is that the hero is equivalent to the average man in Athens. There are problems with each of these assumptions that I'll be exploring in a fuller review for a professional magazine but I want to point them out here for the layperson.

Ultimately this is a good study not because it proves that men are in danger of being feminized in tragedy but because it points out the complicated and flexible nature of gender in the ancient world through all it's citations and quoted texts or scholarship. It's a great start if you are interested in these subjects yourself.

I just wish the book would have gone farther -- expanding into the issue of gender in all of the dramatic performances and pieces -- or limited itself more to each playwright and what he wanted to accomplish. To me, either of those could have been more persuasive.

Ron Tiner is a self-taught artist who has worked as a freelance illustrator for over thirty years. His work has included traditional fairy tales, stories of Robin Hood and numerous books of classic literature, including the works of William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. Ron has also written extensively on art and illustration.

fairly nice

didn't like it much, it's all about go out and see different people, alot of writings and less things to teach you "how to's", to me it's not the right book on how to draw from your imagination. one simple thing to do is "keep on drawing ALOT, draw every position either you like or don't like, then you'll draw without a model" but you have to learn the foundations.

This is very good figure drawing instruction.

The book has a spiral binding, which is a novelty, but the wired connection allows the book to sit flat on a table, or drape over a knee, and remain precisely on the page you need to study.

The author's strong suit is the abundance of illustrations, which include the different kinds of Figure Puppets. There are the stick figures, those made with Ovals, and those made Cylinders, and those made with Rectangles and so on, so that the student can explore the different styles of representing the figure in motion.

I expecially like the author's GESTURE illustrations, and the many figures showing animation of all kinds. The author also offers an abundance of illustrations for Hands & Arms, Legs & Feet, Head and Torso etc. However, it was a surprise to see that not only are there illustrations for rough sketches, the author also provides some illustrations for detailed human anatamy in terms of bone and muscle structue.

At the end, the author adds materal about illustrations in Graphic Narrative, which means to tell a story as would be found in a "comic".

Originally priced at $19.99, the book is worth it for the special binding. However, Amazon reduces the price to $14.99, which makes FIGURE DRAWING WITHOUT A MODEL a very good buy.

A must have...

Mr. Tiner really opened the world of figure drawing to me. I have purchased other figure drawing books, but this one stands head and shoulders above them all. This book is dedicated to the human figure and covers it from head-to-toe!
If someone is serious about developing the skills to be able to draw from their imagination - then purchase this book. The humans figure is a world unto its self and certainly takes practice. Tiner leads you by the hand and illustrates what he preaches.
Don't be mislead though... This book is a tool through which hours of practice and applying your newfound knowledge, will bring you to the level of mastering the human anatomy. To achieve what Tiner has illustrated, it will be a life long process.
Just flipping through the book, will inspire any illustrator or casual artist. The book is chalk full of wonderful illustrations and really guides the artist down the right path.
Others topics covered are picture composition and graphic narrative. Invaluable tips on body types, facial expressions, and bone structure. The majority of the book is centered around instructing the artist on the path to drawing the human figure from ones own memory. Tiner certainly accomplishes that!
