It was a joy to learn from such a well designed text/manual. I still use the book today in my work, setting up a geotechnical database/GIS spatial analysis. John Archibald Wheeler is Joseph Henry Professor Emeritus at Princeton University and was, until his retirement, Blumberg Professor of Physics and Director, Center for Theoretical Physics at the University of Texas at Austin. A stunner of a book

This is truely an amazing book. Wheeler does for General Relativity what Hawking did for Cosmology in "A Brief History of Time", and in some sense they are similar books. However Wheeler has a unique, quirky style of writing that makes the book an entertaining adventure to read.
Wheeler is able to pull off a major accomplishment: He explains Einstein's General Relativity in a clear, straightforward manner, with a minimum of math. It's "conventional wisdom" that General Relativity is seriously serious stuff, the domain of hardcore Physics geeks. That doesn't faze Wheeler. He leads the reader along, gleefully pointing out the scenery, making it all look quite simple and understandable. And then all of a sudden, when you least expect it, you find he's derived and presented Einstein's field equations with only a teensy-tiny bit of algebra! Even if you know this stuff already, his presentation makes you think about it with a new perspective.
And did I mention the illustrations? They are really exceptional.
If you have any interest or dealings with GR, ya gotta have this book!

Able to "see" spacetime

This is a beautiful, poetic, and generous book. I found that after reading and mulling over each section, I could eventually visualize how space was behaving under the influence of mass, and could also see why one needed to choose one's point of view carefully to understand the physics.
The book is intended as an introduction to general relativity, without much tensor formalism, but it does not neglect the geometrical underpinnings. It presents a very nice way to get at the physics, with creative and light-hearted diagrams.
I'm not so sure that Wheeler's own poems, which introduce many of the chapters, are a great success, but I admire and salute him for including them. Even his poetry helps to open additional doors to understanding general relativity.
A book that is truly beautiful.

Lilly Higgins comes from a family of ten and was born and raised in Cobh, Co. Cork. She has taught at Ballymaloe Cookery School and writes a popular blog, lillyhiggins.ie. Her first book, Make, Bake, Love, was a bestseller. She is a weekly columnist and photographer for the Sunday Business Post, as well as writing regularly for various Irish and UK magazines and newspapers. She is a guest chef on RTE afternoon television and presenter of RTE2's 'Ireland's Best Young Baker'. She also starred in 'Fancy Vittles', a comedy and cookery show with her sister Maeve. Solution for beginners

Just like to say after purchasing other books which should have been for beginners and turned out not to be so.This book Watercolors in a weekend - flowers was finally what I needed! This is really a step by step book. I was able to follow directions easily and creating is a great joy - I can do it! Perfect for beginner watercolorists.

After months of sitting with my preschooler at the easel and painting nothing but crude daisies, I bought this book. It's been three days and I am already painting flowers that look like flowers. The techniques are simple and are explained well with text and photographs. I find that many how-to-paint books are filled with the artist's own finished works but never show the intimidated beginner how to get there. This book is different in that it takes the reader through a step-by-step process that begins with the first stroke and ends with the final product. I highly recommend this book to the beginning watercolorist.

A Knitting Junkie's Dream come true!

I received this book from Amazon less than a week ago, and have already completed the parrot, have bought the yarn for the platypus and wombat, and am looking forward to trying my hand at just about every creature in the book! My son sees me knitting all the time (I also teach knitting) and asked me to knit him a parrot. I suppose I might have figured out a pattern on my own, but how happy I was when I saw one of the reviews for "World of Knitted Toys" by Kath Dalmeny that mentioned there was a parrot pattern included! I did some alterations..making the parrot a "love bird" rather than a macaw, because that is the kind of parrot my son wanted. It was quite easy to knit, the instructions were relatively easy to follow, and alterations in color were not a problem. I did have to get used to how Ms. Dalmeny wrote out her instructions, as it's a bit different from the usual patterns found here in the U.S.A., but once I got the hang of how she expressed herself, it was clear as day to me. None of the patterns appear unduly complicated or difficult. Anyone with even modest experience with knitting can have great success with these projects. I am really happy with this book, and consider it a true "knitter's treasure"!

A knitter's delight!

As a doll and critter knitter from way back, I have a shelf full of knitted toy and doll books and loose patterns, but this one tops them all! What a great collection of well illustrated, patterns, clear and easy to follow. For those of us addicted to 4 dpn knitting in the round, most of the head-body and leg and arm directions are easily adapted to that method as. Patterns call for double knit yarn but also work well with sport weight yarn. I've learned a few new and very useful tricks as well. Somewhat experienced beginners should have no trouble turning out critters they'll be proud of, and the rest of us will knit critters we never expected to. I've only made 4 so far, but am well on my way to at least a year of knitting fun with this book.

It really creats the animal world!

This book lines out the animals based on where they live. Instead of a single knitted animal, you can make a project such as animals in Jungle, Austrlia Outback, on the Farm, in the deep blue sea, in the forrest, on safari or in the snowy regions. You can tell a story with these projects. I love this concept.

I only made a clown fish so far. It is a quick and easy pattern as author said. But it comes out so nice. I won numerous WOW out it.

I highly recommend this book!

"Orestes" was one of Euripides' most popular plays in antiquity. Wright’s book offers its readers a clear and insightful introduction to the play. Students unfamiliar with Orestes will gain valuable insights into the world of the drama and a close and interesting analysis of the themes of the play. The Companion also provides a summary of scholarly opinions about the drama and allows interested readers to pursue themes further with the help of the bibliography. Those more familiar with the tragedy will still find much to enjoy in Wright’s well-written discussion. Like Euripides W. does not give us easy answers but he does raise important questions about the Orestes and our search for its elusive meaning.
